Dona Onete

Singer-songwriter · n. 1939
“"Carimbó chamegado" is carimbó with a touch of tenderness, with the swaying of the body of someone born by the river.”

Ionete da Silveira Gama was born on Marajó Island and grew up listening to the batuques, the bois, and the cordões de pássaro of the Pará countryside. She taught history for decades in Igarapé-Miri, where she was also active in the local cultural scene, and composed music without any intention of recording it.

Her first album, *Feitiço Caboclo*, was released in 2012, when she was 73 years old. Its success took her songs to festivals in Brazil and Europe. In 2016, she released *Banzeiro*, which solidified what she calls *carimbó chamegado*: the traditional rhythm infused with bolero, *brega*, and the swing of the sound systems.

At Clube dos Lisos, Dona Onete is the guest of honor. Her nights at Estação das Docas are usually sold out, and the lyrics about the river, açaí, and love by the docks are already part of the venue’s regular repertoire.
